Just a little over 3 km from the rush and bustle of Dublin city centre is the Phoenix Park, the largest city park in Europe. Just less than 1800 acres in size, its vast spaces give you the impression that you have momentarily stepped out of the city and suddenly found yourself in the countryside. The park was originally an enclosed deer estate, and a large variety of animal and plant life are to be found here. Of course, you can still see the herds of fallow deer still freely roaming through the grasslands, and with a little stealth you can usually get close enough to get some wonderful photos.
The park is popular for recreational activities, and aside from walkers and joggers you will also see polo, cricket, Gaelic football and hurling. A visit to the park should also include Dublin Zoo which is one of the oldest in the world. It has a beautifully relaxed atmosphere and it is a delight for all ages, but especially memorable for younger children.
Near the Zoo, you will see the imposing Wellington Monument which commemorates the victories of the Iron Duke. Four large bronze plaques skirt its sides and these were cast from cannon captured in the battle of Waterloo. This is the tallest obelisk in Europe, so go up close to get a real impression of its scale.
Towards the centre of the park and near the large Papal cross, are the impressive residences of the President of Ireland and the United States Ambassador. Also nearby, is the Phoenix Park Visitors’ Centre which provides an exhibition and audiovisual presentation of the park’s history.
